The art of surfing was first discovered by Joseph Banks on the HMS Endeavour during the first voyage of James Cook, during the ship's stay in Tahiti. The riding of waves has most likely existed since humans began swimming in the ocean. In this sense, bodysurfing is the oldest type of wave-catching. Standing up on what is now called a surfboard is a relatively recent innovation developed by the Polynesians. Surfing was a central part of ancient Polynesian culture and today it is one of the most popular extreme sports in America.

After the sad passing of iconic surf film maker Bruce Brown, I found an interview with him soon after the 50th Anniversary of ‘Endless Summer’.

I really enjoyed reading this interview as goes into how Bruce got into surfing, film making and the process of filming ‘Endless Summer’.

Brown’s films include Slippery When Wet (1958), Surf Crazy (1959), Barefoot Adventure (1960), Surfing Hollow Days (1961), Waterlogged (1962), and his best known film, The Endless Summer (1966), which received nationwide theatrical release in 1966. Considered among the most influential in the genre, The Endless Summer follows surfers Mike Hynson and Robert August around the world.
